Learning to play chess is fairly simple, and it is a skill you will be glad to have for the rest of your life.

Let's start with the chess board.

Chess is played on an 8x8 board. The horizontal files have the names of a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h. The vertical columns are named 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. To find the name of any particular square, go down until you reach the letter designation. Then go to the left from the same square until you reach the number designation. A square with the letter designation of e and a number designation of 4 is known as the square e4.
